Understanding Scoliosis: What You Need to Know

At Camelback Spine Care, we believe that knowledge is the first step to better health. One condition we often see in both adolescents and adults is scoliosis, an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. While it can vary from mild to severe, scoliosis is a manageable condition—especially when detected early.

🩺 What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis causes the spine to curve sideways, often in an “S” or “C” shape. While mild curves may not cause symptoms, larger curves can affect posture, comfort, and overall spinal health.

👀 Common Signs of Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders or waist

  • One hip appearing higher than the other

  • Visible curve in the back

  • Leaning to one side

  • In more advanced cases: back pain or difficulty breathing due to reduced lung space

🌟 Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the severity of the curve and the patient’s age:

  • Observation & Monitoring – For mild cases, regular check-ups help track changes.

  • Bracing – For adolescents with moderate curves, bracing can prevent further progression during growth.

  • Physical Therapy – Strengthening and stretching exercises can improve posture, mobility, and comfort.

  • Surgery – Severe cases may require surgical correction to realign and stabilize the spine.

At Camelback Spine Care, our board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons provide comprehensive evaluations and personalized care plans for patients with scoliosis.

💡 Living Well With Scoliosis

Scoliosis doesn’t define you. With the right care and attention, patients can lead active, fulfilling lives. Early detection and ongoing monitoring are the keys to preventing progression and protecting long-term spine health.

While scoliosis may not be preventable, we assure you that there's much we can do to prevent the problem from becoming a lifelong concern. For expert management of your child's scoliosis, contact one of our offices in Sun City, Peoria, or Phoenix, Arizona, for a consultation.
